Summer Swing Fest, an eagerly awaited annual dance gathering celebrating swing dancing, live musical performances, and immersive workshops, is set to unfold in Mesa, Arizona, from August 15-17, 2025. Attendees can eagerly anticipate a diverse array of classes spanning various swing dance forms, including Soul Lindy, Carolina Shag, Collegiate Shag, Balboa, and an assortment of other exciting styles! Lindy Hop is a fusion of jazz, tap, breakaway, and Charleston, characterized by its improvisational and social nature. Carolina Shag: Born along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this dance emerged from the African American community in the late 1930s. It's known for its smooth, quick, six-count, eight-step pattern, typically danced to "beach music." Collegiate Shag: This energetic partner dance, done to uptempo swing and pre-swing jazz music, is believed to have originated in the African American community of the Carolinas in the 1920s. It's characterized by fast footwork, bouncy movements, and a close connection between partners. Balboa: A swing dance that emerged in Southern California in the 1920s and 1930s. It's distinguished by its close connection between partners and small, defined footwork, often danced in crowded ballrooms. There are two main styles: "Pure Balboa," danced exclusively in a closed position, and "Bal-Swing," which incorporates open positions and more elaborate moves.
